What Domain Rating actually measures
DR is Ahrefs' 0–100 score of one thing: how strong your backlink profile is compared to every other site in their index. It counts the unique domains linking to you, weighs each by its own authority, and squashes the result onto a logarithmic scale. That log scale is the detail most people miss — climbing from DR 10 to 20 takes a few good links, climbing from 70 to 80 takes a war chest.
Two honest caveats. First, DR is a comparative metric, not a ranking factor — Google has never seen your DR and never will. It correlates with rankings because links are still a core ranking signal, and DR is a decent proxy for links. Second, DR says nothing about relevance: a DR 35 site with deep topical authority routinely outranks DR 70 generalists on its home turf.
Why the number still matters
Because everyone in the link economy uses it as a filter. Editors check your DR before accepting a guest post. Journalists' inboxes get triaged by it. Prospects Google you and judge the tools that quote it. And when you're the one doing outreach, your own DR decides whether your pitch reads as "peer" or "spam". It's also the fastest single-glance read on a competitor: if they're DR 55 and you're DR 22, you now know why they outrank you with worse content — and roughly how much link work closes the gap.

How to raise it — the real version
One rule drives everything: unique referring domains move DR, repeat links barely do. The hundredth link from the same blog is worth almost nothing; the first link from a fresh, authoritative domain is worth a lot. So the playbook is about earning new domains, on repeat: digital PR that gives journalists data worth citing, linkable assets (free tools, original research, definitive guides) that pick up links while you sleep, and guest contributions on publications your buyers actually read. What doesn't work: buying $30 links from farms — it inflates the dial briefly and builds nothing Google rewards.
