What the grade measures — and what it can't

This checker grades the technical floor of AI visibility: access and comprehension. Access is whether the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini can reach your pages at all — one Disallow line written in 2023 can still be silently erasing you from AI answers today. Comprehension is whether an engine that gets in can work out who you are and what you sell: structured data, a real H1, a description worth quoting, a sitemap that surfaces your money pages.

What no scanner can measure is evidence — the citations, comparisons and third-party mentions that make an engine confident enough to recommend you by name. That part is earned, not configured. Start with our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT, or run the full DIY AI visibility audit if you want the complete picture. And if you'd rather someone just do it, that's the job: AI SEO is our core engagement.

One honest caveat: a scan is a snapshot. AI answers reshuffle weekly as models update and competitors publish. For continuous tracking of who ChatGPT and Perplexity actually recommend in your category — and whether it's you — we built MentionFlow.

AI visibility, answered

What is AI visibility?

Whether assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews can read your site, understand what you sell, and cite or recommend you when buyers ask. It's the AI-era equivalent of ranking — except there's usually one answer, not ten blue links, so the sites that get read and trusted take everything.

What does the AI Visibility Checker test?

Sixteen checks across seven groups: robots.txt rules for nine AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot, Bytespider, meta-externalagent, Amazonbot, Applebot-Extended), plus llms.txt, JSON-LD structured data, meta description, H1, Open Graph tags and your XML sitemap. Each check is weighted by how much it affects whether engines can read and cite you, then rolled into a single A–F grade.

How do I show up in ChatGPT answers?

Three layers. Access: don't block the crawlers that feed the engines. Comprehension: structured data, clean headings and consistent entity information, so models know exactly who you are. Evidence: citations and mentions on sources engines trust — earned, not configured. This tool grades the first two; our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT covers the third.

Is blocking GPTBot bad for SEO?

It has zero effect on your Google rankings. But blocking AI crawlers removes you from AI answers — an engine that can't read your site will paraphrase your competitors instead. Plenty of sites blocked every AI bot in 2023 "to be safe" and quietly vanished from AI search. Decide bot by bot: training-only crawlers are a legitimate opt-out, search-side crawlers are your distribution.
